Slur in India: Udaipur

Udaipur is a small town in Rajasthan which years ago became famous when the bond team turned up to film the movie Octopussy, which incidentally you can still watch in numerous guesthouses at seven o’clock every evening. It is understandable that they do this as there are not loads of things to see in Udaipur but most important for the Slur team is always the vibe, and the vibe here is cool.

Udaipur is a small town built around a lake with a hotel, made famous by bond, in the middle of the lake. On one side of the lake is Lal Ghat, the undeniable backpacker centre of the town, on the other side is the slightly quieter Hanuman Ghat.

Lal Ghat has everything you would expect from a traveler hub, from the cheap guesthouses to the German bakery, it has the tailor shops which can knock you up anything you want copied and the temples ringing bells at all times of the day and night.

Hanuman Ghat is similar but quieter and has the benefit of fantastic views of the Taj hotel on the lake from any one of a number of rooftop restaurants selling the usual mixture of Indian food and dishes catering to the tastes of the backpacking youth that find their way here.

Udaipur is a very relaxed place to be until you walk the streets. The streets were made for pedestrians and the odd cow but now they have to deal with every manner of vehicular traffic, masses of people and even the odd elephant.

The banks of the lake are used for everything from laundry to bathing and net fishing and the locals are understandably proud of their town, telling you often that of all the towns you will see in Rajasthan, Udaipur will be the one you love the best.

This is a town with a lot of charm, you can see why the bond team chose to film here, Slur loves Udaipur.
